A group focused on the future sustainability of the lower Mary River catchment. We were formed in October 2007 in response to the Queensland Government claims that there would be no downstream impact from the proposed Traveston Crossing dam. A fantastic website, created by one of our founding members which
summarises the issues with the proposed dam is www.ourgreatsandy.com.
After Peter Garrett said "No" to the dam, we re-evaluated our role and decided on the following aims for organisation:
• Creating and maintaining a clean and healthy Mary River and Great Sandy Strait.
• Protecting the natural environment of the river and the strait, including their biodiversity.
• Supporting more research on the river and the strait including research on species and water resources.
• Increasing awareness and research related to issues of water use and extraction
• Enhancing community involvement in some or all of these areas (including recreation in and around the river and strait) and also inspiring the community's feelings of ownership related to the river and the strait.
• Enhancing education related to the above issues.
The Mary River Koala Corridor Project is our first on-ground project protecting the Mary River and her beautiful biodiversity. We welcome your support.
