The idea
behind this project is that improving the Mary River can also improve habitat
for the Koala because, as Australian Koala Foundation mapping shows, the banks
of the Mary River provide a corridor of primary koala habitat. To see for yourself go to https://www.savethekoala.com/koalamap.html
and once viewing the map, click on “layers”, then “vegetation” then “Koala
Habitat Atlas”. The thin red line along the river (particularly from about
Netherby north) signifies primary koala habitat.
We have
received funding from the Federal Government for a Community Action Grant (CAG) to
undertake a project of fencing off, widening existing fenced areas, undertaking
weed control and revegetation on up to 5 properties to the north of Petrie Park
in Tiaro. Our project includes community field days focussing on koalas and the
link between a healthy riparian zone and healthy koala populations on the
Fraser Coast.
During a
site visit and discussions about this project in July, we were lucky enough to
have local koala experts, Natalie and Val Richardson join us. They provided
advice and background on local threats to the koala.
We'll be keeping our members and other interested groups up to date about future activities associated with this project.
